Providing the teaching, marketing and HR staff at Southport College with an easy-to-implement proofreading method
Quick facts
Southport College is a Further Education college which provides a diverse programme of education and training to over 3,500 students. The college is Merseyside’s largest provider of education for 16-19 year olds and also offers hundreds of places on courses for adult learners.
Courses
Cathy Taylor, Staff Development Co-ordinator at Southport College, wanted to train a group of twenty delegates from different departments with varied experience levels in proofreading.
Delegates came from the college’s administration and marketing teams, as well as lecturers who needed to proofread students’ work.
The training solution: A half-day Quick Wins course providing a simple, yet powerful proofreading method for documents of any type
The course taught delegates how to use the techniques that professional writers use to proofread their work, and the work of others. Topics covered included the correct use of spelling and grammar tools, British standard proofing marks and even proofreading for design.
Following the course, delegates reported feeling far more confident about checking their own writing, and that of students.
Client feedback
Delegates were asked to give a score out of five on a list of feedback questions, such as ‘Quality of the training content’, ‘Quality of the trainer’ and ‘I have learned new techniques that will enhance my writing’. The average score was 4 out of 5.
“My proofreading techniques have definitely improved, and I’ve also learned some new ones.”
