Are you finding it difficult to get people excited about something you have to say?
Well, as with jokes, it’s often the way you tell ‘em that counts. The good news is that spicing up dull copy to give it more impact doesn’t have to take that long. Here are some time-honoured and respected techniques for producing punchy writing.
Ask questions
We started this trade secret with a question. The trouble is it’s such an old trick that it’s effect can be diminished. So try to find a question which is not only relevant, but which also challenges and resonates with your audience.
Use short sentences
Short sentences have impact. They just do. Long sentences, however, that go on and on and on forever without any end in sight just don’t seem to have that same razor-sharp edge.
Consider using one sentence paragraphs
Paragraphs containing only one sentence create impact by standing out on their own.
They just do.
Be careful though: these constructions aren’t appropriate for all copy – you might want to avoid using them, for example, in formal documents.
Don’t fear the imperative
The imperative form begins with an order or command; it jolts that part of our brain that reacts to instruction, which is why it’s often a great way to add impact to your writing. Some examples of imperatives are:
- Forward this email.
- Call us today!
- Subscribe below.
